Understanding Otoplasty (Ear Reshaping) Surgery
Otoplasty addresses prominauris—commonly called prominent or protruding ears—where the ears project more than usual due to an under-formed antihelical fold, an enlarged/over-projected conchal bowl, or both. Kids and adults with prominauris often feel self-conscious, hide their ears with hairstyles or hats, or face teasing and social stress. Surgery is typically considered around ages 5–7, when the ears are ~85–90% of their expected adult size. Its an effective surgery for those who want lasting symmetry and confidence.
The goal is balance, not a “pinned” look. Through incisions hidden behind the ear, sutures are used to create or enhance the antihelical fold and gently set back the conchal bowl, bringing the ear closer to the head while preserving natural curves and a smooth helical rim. Results aim for symmetry, a natural ear–scalp angle, and imperceptible incisions. Most patients return to school/work within a week, wear a soft headband at night for protection, and enjoy durable results that let hairstyles—and confidence—open up.
