What Is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty, or “nose job” surgery, reshapes the nose to improve its appearance, correct functional concerns, or both. As a rhinoplasty surgeon with advanced training in otolaryngology, Dr. Kamrava uses structure-preserving, airway-supportive techniques to ensure aesthetic refinement never comes at the expense of breathing.

During surgery, he accesses the nasal interior using one of two approaches.

  • Closed rhinoplasty: Incisions are placed inside the nostrils, resulting in no external scar.
  • Open rhinoplasty: A small incision is placed on the underside of the nose (along the columella), allowing for greater access and precision

Dr. Kamrava’s chosen approach depends on your targeted concerns. An open rhinoplasty is typically preferred for nasal tip revision and significant aesthetic improvements.

Does Rhinoplasty Improve Breathing?

It can, depending on your surgical plan. Many patients have cosmetic and functional concerns, such as a deviated septum or a narrowed nasal valve, contributing to nasal obstruction. Dr. Kamrava draws on his otolaryngology background to correct these issues alongside cosmetic refinement, using:

  • Septoplasty for septal deviation
  • Valve support for the nasal airway
  • Turbinate reduction for enlarged turbinates

For certain patients, combining functional correction with cosmetic refinement in one surgery enhances nasal appearance, reduces obstruction, and improves airflow. A consultation with Dr. Kamrava determines whether cosmetic refinement, functional correction, or a combined approach best fits your anatomy and goals.

What Does Rhinoplasty Treat?

Rhinoplasty with Dr. Kamrava addresses:

  • A dorsal hump or uneven bridge
  • An undefined or over-rotated tip
  • Nasal asymmetry or width imbalance
  • Nasal breathing difficulty caused by structural obstruction

Whatever your concern, Dr. Kamrava delivers subtle results that refine your existing features and complement your overall appearance.

What Are the Benefits of Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty with Dr. Kamrava can:

  • Create better balance between your nose and your other facial features
  • Refine your profile while maintaining your unique features
  • Support easier breathing when functional concerns are addressed
  • Deliver long-lasting, natural-looking results

For many patients, the result is more than a balanced profile. Rhinoplasty can deliver newfound confidence in how patients present themselves every day.

Am I a Good Candidate for Rhinoplasty?

Good candidates for rhinoplasty are healthy adults who are bothered by the appearance of their nose, have nasal breathing difficulty, or both. Rhinoplasty patients should also be willing to set aside recovery downtime and have realistic expectations about their results.

How Is Rhinoplasty Tailored To Different Patients?

Whether you’re seeking subtle refinement, preservation of masculine or feminine facial characteristics, or changes that respect your heritage, Dr. Kamrava tailors each rhinoplasty to your anatomy and goals. Common approaches include:

  • Female rhinoplasty: Focuses on soft, elegant refinement, smoothing the profile and defining the tip while preserving feminine lines.
  • Male rhinoplasty: Preserves a strong, masculine profile with straight dorsal lines and a supported nasal tip that is not over-rotated.
  • Ethnic rhinoplasty: Enhances shape and symmetry while honoring each patient’s cultural identity and individual features, respecting differences in skin thickness and cartilage strength.

Dr. Kamrava discusses his approach in detail during your personalized consultation. When profile balance calls for it, he may recommend pairing a nose job with chin augmentation to enhance projection and create a more proportional facial silhouette.

What Is Revision Rhinoplasty?

Dr. Kamrava specializes in revision rhinoplasty for patients unhappy with a prior nose surgery or experiencing ongoing breathing difficulty. Revision rhinoplasty is typically more complex and requires Dr. Kamrava’s specialized training in otolaryngology to achieve safe, successful outcomes.

During revision rhinoplasty, he uses advanced structural techniques and, when needed, grafting to achieve stable, natural-looking results.

Rhinoplasty FAQ

What’s the best age for rhinoplasty?

There’s no “best age” for rhinoplasty, but Dr. Kamrava recommends waiting until your facial features reach full maturity. For females, that’s typically around age 15, and for males, around age 16. The procedure is usually suitable for healthy adults of all ages.

Is rhinoplasty painful?

The surgery itself isn’t painful because you’re placed under general anesthesia. After surgery, it’s common to experience some discomfort for a few days. However, Dr. Kamrava prescribes pain medications and shares detailed postoperative instructions to help manage your comfort. Applying cold compresses to the cheeks and around the eyes, along with sleeping with your head elevated during the initial recovery period, can help minimize discomfort and swelling.

How long do rhinoplasty results last?

Rhinoplasty results are permanent. However, you may notice subtle changes in your nose as you age.
